Un-fantastic-plastic

We have always maintained that looking after the environment is a collective effort and depends entirely on everybody doing their bit.

We are constantly striving to improve the way we do business here at Paint the Town Green. For example, we have recently joined forces with First Mile who believe all companies can be planet savers and offer a simple and low-cost recycling and waste service for businesses. Listed as one of Britain’s most inspiring companies by the London Stock Exchange in 2017, we'll be talking more about First Mile in another blog soon.

For now, we want to celebrate where brilliant individuals are taking a stand and making a difference. In short, that’s exactly what it’s about. We need to all start consciously and proactively making a difference for the sake of our natural world. We musn't lose sight of our good intentions. 'A Plastic Ocean' incurred a huge public response. It must however stay front of mind if we are to make a real difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW3jEIYBFzg

David Attenborough speaks at Climate Conference in Poland

The amazing David Attenborough spoke only two days ago at a UN Climate Summit in Katowice, Poland urging leaders to lead: “Right now, we’re facing a man-made disaster of global scale.” "Leaders of the world, you must lead," Attenborough concluded. "The continuation of our civilizations and the natural world upon which we depend is in your hands."

So, high fives go to Shetlanders, Natasha Maltby and Becky Robertson who have opened a pop up shop called Why Waste? Feeling disheartened with the amount of plastic waste on the Shetland beaches, Natasha realised she needed to make changes in her life. A mother on a restricted budget, she had always been price driven until this point when she started Happy Eco People – an online buy to order business enabling people to buy eco-friendly products, plastic free items affordably. Every day household items such as bamboo toothbrushes, re-usable kitchen towel also made from bamboo and stainless-steel razors can be purchased for a reasonable cost. The shop also encourages re-fills for items like washing up liquid. Natasha emphasizes ‘it’s about promoting change and feeling good about what we’re doing.”

Another hurrah goes to enviromentalist Martin Dorey who vented his fury in public and created a stink when his book ‘No. More. Plastic’ was delivered shrink wrapped, calling it an ‘absolute shambles’. Martin started the 2 Minute Beach Clean campaign in 2009 and insists major change is needed in the way we use plastic. His publishers are by all accounts working hard to stop any further shrink-wrapped copies of his book being circulated.

    BYO weighing  BYO Tooting Market

Finally, a little closer to home, the ever changing vibrant Tooting Market has a couple of resident businesses that are living Gandi’s own words ’Be the change you want to see’. BYO offers all sort of consumables from chocolate, dried fruits, detergents, nuts and pasta plus much more. They will fill up your glasses case if you want (!) and you pay by weight. Their sole endeavour is to reduce packaging and good waste. Phil likes to nibble on a few nuts when he's short on time dashing around on site visits. We'll be sure to make sure he pops in to Tooting Market when he's next passing with an empty paint pot!

We can't help but feel the war on plastic risks being over-sensationalised. It's a very real issue and the only way to truly combat it is for each and every one of us to do their bit.

May this blog revive the very best intentions and turn good intention into active action. Collective. Action. Change. Good stuff.
